check out videos by skoolplusplus, derekowens and teachertubemath on complex numbers for further examples and explanation on this. For now, just know that square root of -1 equal to i and i squared is equal to -1, cause those two are the commonly used ones.

    - square root 25 does not allow you to do anything further. So, the imaginary number (i) is introduced to allow us to simply it.

just look at -square root 25 as square root 25 and you'll get a 5

but since this is -square root 25 to get the answer put a i after the 5 and you'll get 5i as the answer

The 5i automatically let us know that this was not square root 25 but -square root 25. That's all there is to it.

lifeisthemeaning gave you a pretty good explanation as well.

  • Because √-25 is the same thing as (√-1)(√25). Remember the way square roots are multiplied. For example, (√9)(√4) = √36 = 6. With ί we have √-1. If we have √-25, to simplify we can rewrite it. How can you make a negative number a positive? Multiply by -1. We rewrite it (√-1)(√25), in other words we have ί√25 or 5ί. Do you see it?

  • this is amazing im so glad i found this but can i just ask 1 question, when you use the i im not sure how the i takes away the negative from the square root of -25? any help would be greatly appreciated.
