For those that are not confident about fixing their laptop (like I was), I give you this. After normal use for two years, the hinges actually snapped. I noticed a lot of play in the monitor, and on the first dis-assembly, I noticed the monitor was only being held up by the plastic frame that surrounds it. So I ordered some new hinges from HP and the rest is on the video.

Thanks to Alfred DiBlasi for the humor inspiration.

  • i have the same laptop... the hinges are broken or something, or the springs if there are any. the monitor is just loose completely, it flaps here and there, i have to lean it against a wall. anyways. also the fan makes a lot of noise and turns off by itself every once in a while.any tips?

  • @TasteForDisaster Be sure to read the assembly manual before doing anything. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself; send it in or ask a friend.

The fan on these things is just ridiculously loud, however; mine never cut out randomly. I'd try reinstalling the ACPI driver as a first step.

  • @Branhower1 I'm not really a pro at these things, but I don't really care, it's a really old laptop that pissed me off so many times I just want to smash it with a baseball bat sometimes. anyways, should I get a new fan? or should I try to disassemble the laptop and clean it? and what is the ACPI driver for? (sorry if it's a stupid question)

  • @TasteForDisaster The ACPI driver pretty much regulates all the small electrical things in your computer, like CPU voltage, fan speeds, USB charging power, etc. Something may be flaky in your install.

I don't think you need a new fan. A deep clean like you suggested will probably help. Mine had a bunch of dust clogging up the air vents.

But if you want to smash this thing with a baseball bat sometimes, maybe it's time for a new laptop... ;)

  • @Branhower1 you have no idea how many times I was about to get a new one. But every time I managed to save up enough money, I spend it on something totally different ^_^ last time I bought a new guitar instead, haha, but this time hopefully I won't get distracted by any other items. one thing I'm not sure, should I get a laptop of dekstop this time? because desktops are cheaper and better, right? or should I make one myself?

  • @TasteForDisaster Eh, it all depends. I tend to get my best creative ideas abroad; which is why I'd want to carry around a powerful laptop. The downside is you can easily kit out a desktop that's roughly half-again as powerful for the same price. These newer laptops with the Core i architecture though can be quite capable at media stuffz. For gaming though, desktop all the way.

  • I had the same problem with my HP dv9000 and the left hinge cracked. Also the front frame of the monitor was also cracked to were the left hinge connected to.

  • What is it with all these people repairing laptops in the dark??? I was going to watch this, but I can't see what the hell he is doing.

  • @Branhower1 yea, I'm not sure, I'm not really a gamer, used to kinda be one. I still like to play some online stuff with friends once in a while. yea, you kind of brought me back to my senses, I'm afraid of getting a powerful pc cause then I might turn into what I once was xD

  • @Burningmockingbird h ttp://parts.hp.com . Make sure to type "DV8315NR" instead of "DV8000T" when you go looking.
