Finding acceptance in the world is a challenging feat for all of us, a rite of passage, so to speak, from childhood to adulthood. Finding acceptance in a community that doesn't understand you and avoids the issue by turning a blind eye, is a daunting task faced by the individuals of MPlus. MPlus works primarily to promote sexual health for men who have sex with men (MSM). For the last month, the individuals at MPlus and our ARI crew have been shooting, editing, and screening their own movie. This workshop began in the form of craft-making under the theme of safe sex, a major message of the organization, before progressing into photography and culminated in film making. During a topic brainstorming session, one girl shared with the group the story of her young cousin; an effeminate boy who had had a hard time fitting in with his friends, and gaining acceptance from his family. She talked about a specific traumatizing incident, where the boy was beaten for putting a flower behind his ear while playing. It was agreed that the imagery in this story was powerful and that it held an extremely important message for not only the GLBT youth, but the Thai community at large. The film became an re-enactment of this incident, from the perspective of the little boy.
