Yes, the destruction of the oil platform WAS taken directly from the climax of the original 1968 "demo reel" that Irwin produced in order to sell this idea to NBC for its 1968-'69 schedule [they passed on a series, but were interested again, three years later- hence this movie]. He may have had a bigger budget here, but he was still "cutting corners" whenever possible!
This was a spin off from the voyage to the bottom of the television series. Great DVD buy it.
