From a recently surfaced 1080p High-Definition digital transfer of Singin' in the Rain (1952).
Let's hope Warner decides to release a restored version of this transfer on Blu-Ray (& DVD) for the film's upcoming 60th anniversary!
"Make 'Em Laugh" (1948)
Note: The melody of Cole Porter's "Be a Clown" (1948), first heard in Kelly's film, The Pirate, was "borrowed"/sampled without permission for this song.

Music by Nacio Herb Brown
Lyrics by Arthur Freed
Sung and Danced by Donald O'Connor
~~~~~~~~~~Lyrics~~~~~~~~~~
Though the world is so full of a number things,
I know we should all be as happy as
But are we?
No, definitely no, positively no.
Decidedly no. Mm mm.
Short people have long faces and
Long people have short faces.
Big people have little humor
And little people have no humor at all!
And in the words of that immortal buddy
Samuel J. Snodgrass, as he was about to be lead
To the guillotine:
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Don't you know everyone wants to laugh?
(Ha ha!)
My dad said "Be an actor, my son
But be a comical one
They'll be standing in lines
For those old honky tonk monkeyshines"
Now you could study Shakespeare and be quite elite
And you can charm the critics and have nothin' to eat
Just slip on a banana peel
The world's at your feet
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em...
Make 'em laugh
Don't you know everyone wants to laugh
My grandpa said go out and tell 'em a joke
But give it plenty of hoke
Make 'em roar
Make 'em scream
Take a fall
But a wall
Split a seam
You start off by pretending
You're a dancer with grace
You wiggle 'till they're
Giggling all over the place
And then you get a great big custard pie in the face
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Don't you know... all the...wants..?
My dad...
They'll be standing in lines
For those old honky tonk monkeyshines
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Don't you know everyone wants to laugh?
Ah ha ha ha ha ha há
Ah ha ha ha ha ha
Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Make 'em laugh, ah ah!
Make 'em laugh, ah ah!
Make 'em laugh, ah ah!
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh
Make 'em laugh!
This guy is amazing. just try to do correctly one of those things and you'll pull 10 muscles for sure. Let alone doing all that and sing.
After filming this he was bed-stricken for three days due to exhaustion. I can see why! Although I bet this was a fun scene to do despite that.
What really is amazing is how few cuts there are. The shots are so long that O'Connor is basically doing this whole routine at once, but that's true for most of this movie and really makes me respect it so much.
Well, there are camera changes at 0:20, 0:40, 1:19, 1:32, 1:50, 2:04, 2:26, 2:44, 3:21, 3:38 and 3:48, so no continuous shot. Nevertheless, this was and still is an amazing scene... I read it had to be done in 1 day, so Mr. O'Connor was seriously exhausted after doing it.
It all looks to be one continuous shot with only one camera.
Nope! Just raw talent. (Like Kelly and Reynolds, his Irish background stood to him well!) I heard that this scene was shot in one take with one camera! Anybody know if that's true? Donald apparently spent two days recovering from exhaustion after it was shot!
