  • Not to be a whiner but it strikes me that the holes would be better drilled in a drill press vise and with a drill press.

  • @scdefion Sure for most people it would be. I've been drilling holes for 22 years on the sides of aircraft on button head rivets and you can't carry a drill press with you. I do better without one ;)

  • @ginsboy2003 I am sure you do better without. I was thinking more along the lines of somebody like me that works off a bench in a shop all day or the guy at home that hasnt done it before.

  • @scdefion Your right, I know my dad or my brother could never do it. It takes a lot of practice. Maybe I'll put a note in the video suggesting the use of a drill press, you have a good point. The problem is if the drill bit starts to walk off the head of the rivet you can angle a had drill to compensate and you can't with a drill press.

  • The set I use for AK rivets has been modified from a air hammer punch. Air hammer punches are thru hardened are good cheap stock. I use a 1/4 inch ball end mill to get the rivet set started. The rest of the forming I do with the set in the lathe and I use a dremel. The aircraft rivet sets as they are will not form the head right for a AK rivet.

  • I use dial calipers to mark the trunnion holes, drill with .062 then open up to 5/32" (4mm rivets). It works every time and after 200+ builds hasn't failed me yet.

Isn't it funny how after doing so many builds, this is just simple assembly, but in the beginning it seemed overly complex.

  • oh man these vids are awesome I first watched your psl build then these. I am blown away by the amount of knowledge you have I wish I had your knowledge and the know how to work with the tools to build the rifles but I have a feeling it would cost me too much to get all the tools to do it. thanks for the vids

  • ginsboy2003, You make the air-rivet gun method look easy - is that the 20 years of practice? I don't know why people bother with expensive jigs and rivetting tools.

  • ginsboy2003, the 3x air rivet gun I'm considering comes with the straight rivet sets - 3/32", 1/8", 5/32" and 3/16" Is all of your rivetting on the receiver done with 5/32" or does the set require further modification? Thanks for a great set of videos.

I have the trunnion clamped in place so there is no way it could twist. I have seen trunnions try to twist after they were drilled but that was due to the spring force of the stock catch. The AKS receiver has that spring loaded latch that goes into the trunnion thru the receiver and it has some twisting force on it.
