  • I remember when pied piper pizza peddler was at Universal. Good times!

  • an i think location and the construction of 2 major roads helped killed universal Mall. Once I-696 and M-59 opened up, Universal Mall slowly died. and having Oakland Mall and Macomb Mall nearby (with better anchors) didn't help the mall. From I-696, you have to go over a mile and a half to reach Universal, and nearly 2 miles from I-75. if you are not from Detroit, you tend to stay to the major roads (i-94, I-96, I-75, M-1, M-3, M-10, US-12, etc)

  • I used to work at Gell's Sporting Goods - great store.

  • The landscape of shopping has changed. The Tel-Twelve mall in Southfield didn't have a movie theater and they were forced to do the same thing that Universal Mall is doing now. That being getting rid of the indoor mall concept and replacing it with big box stores. This is happening all over the country. Smaller indoor malls are a thing of the past.

The anchors that closed at Universal wasn't a local decision in part about a movie theater.

The stores went out of business.

  • GELL'S SPORTING GOODS STORE!

    Old times...

  • Actually, think about what caused the closing of the anchors.... The economy played a part, but not the whole deal. That stupid cheap movie theater did exactly what the residents suspected it would - it drew a whole new clientele. The residents fought the opening of that show. As soon as it was in business, the rest of the mall fell apart bit by bit. Crime, loitering, and an atmosphere that shopping folks wanted to avoid. So they drove out to Oakland or Lakeside, and the mall slowly died.

  • They are rebuilding it. Not sure what stores are going to be there. They should get rid of the dollar store and all of the other low end stores or it will be back to where it was prior to the reconstruction. It needs a JC Penney and a Maceys maybe even Kohls. Nothing real high end just middle of the road. Maybe even a nice restaurant and bar. Just my opinion.

    46 year warren resident.

  • i remember when universal mall was cool to go to we go there every Saturday to see movies or Fridays but now its a dump sorry for saying that but it is now.

    I miss this mall

  • brings back a lot of memories.

  • Haha sweet. Remember Gells sporting goods? I bought some guns there when they were closing. Back in the day that was a cool mall.
