This is a little montage of what its like to travel nearly 1,000 miles by local train in Japan in about 3 min. On this trip we went from Tokyo, to Hamamatsu, to Kyoto, to Nara, to Himeji, to Hiroshima, to Miyajima. Traveling by local train is so much more different than taking a bullet train, most Japanese people would never think of traveling that far by local train, its just unheard of. But, traveling by local train has many benefits as well. Number one the opportunity to actually see the countryside, rather than watching it smear together in a blur through the window of a speeding train. Number two; we also get to meet many different interesting people along the way, which presents many opportunities to practice Japanese, the little I know anyway. True, traveling by JR rail was a bit uncomfortable, the seats are hard, some times you don't have a seat at all, your shoulders ache from lugging around a pack all day, and your eyes are heavy from the lack of sleep but after a while the gentle humming and jerks of the train become soothing in their own way. You find yourself drifting in and out of sleep waking only when the doors of the train shoot open with a whoosh of cool air. Then its back to that half cognizant state of mind, listing to music as the landscape of Japan whizzes by with each blink of a tired eye.
What's the name of the music? natalie macmaster?
