I went on a fly fishing trip in August 2008 to Unalakleet Alaska to catch silver salmon. Every day we caught 25 to 30 fish each, keeping only 4 to eat.

  • Did you use wet or dry flies? i really want to learn and try it 50 miles north of Unk. Id fish for kings and silvers.

  • We used wet flies. I started out with a sinking line in about 3 - 6 foot of water moving moderately fast. Some hits but not alot. I then started using a floating line with a weighted fly. That is how we caught most of the fish.

The most popular flies were the egg sucking leaches in black or purple. Orange egg heads were the most effective for the silvers. If I were going again I might bring a silver spoon with red on it. (similar to what is used for redfish). Let me know where you go. Jim
