In wild and remote western Colorado the Dolores River cuts through ancient red sandstone on its course to meet the lower Colorado River in Utah. The region around the town of Gateway reveals breathing vistas and sheer canyons containing rare pockets of flowing water. Western icons like Butch Cassidy and his wild bunch used this imposing canyon country to hideout from the law and rustle cattle. Later the region's rich uranium deposits helped fuel America's nuclear age. Today however, most of this country remains a window to the past, while offering opportunities to experience the landscape as it has existed for centuries.
But as more and more people populate the west obscure places like Gateway Colorado along the Dolores are being discovered. Groups are emerging to create a National Conservation Area along 170 miles of the Dolores River on Colorado's western border. The Dolores River Coalition is a band of citizens environmental groups and commercial enterprises interested in not only preserving this public land but also accommodating a wide range of users.
