We are currently developing a higher caliber fight scene 10x improved over this one, based on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3rrI7swieo

A USC basic student film is lended a hand by Shinkendo students Michael Shu and James Huang. Stunt blades fitted into existing sword fittings were used, and Shinkendo techniques were adapted for the screen.

This was a first-time foray for us from Shinkendo class to film choreography. Please be nice.

  • Now that's what a true fight in Feudal Japan would have been like, not any of those goddamned Ninjas that every one obsesses with.

  • I thought the choreography was good, but the emotional intensity of the fight wasn't convincing enough for me. it would have been cooler if the samurai in black showed more bloodlust and sakki (the intent to kill). I'm also not sure if this is a differing stylistic thing between sword styles, but both guys' elbows stuck out a tad bit during their Hasso-no-kamae. Other than those few things, I thought you guys did a good job. Sorry for being a critical youtube prick! I enjoyed this a lot though

  • @buzzycomics normaly a fight would have been much quicker. the samurai in white should have easily dispached the other while he was charging

  • Samurai fight ROCKS! Do you guys know Hagakure? It's a wonderful book about the samurai's vision of life. Amazing, I suggest all who read this to read that book.

  • This was nyyyyyyce! :D :D :D (^___^)=b

  • Adored the choreography. Jinsei Shinkendo.

  • Oh yeah thats perfect. Turn the sound on this video off and listen to naruto ost 1 nine tail demon fox, even if you dont like naruto, and start it playing just befor the one in black starts charging. that sets a much more intence and aporporiate atmosphere then the music that plays in this vidio dose

  • @CircleOfFifz I found it hard to feel the intent to kill with the music as well, part of it is it was to quiet, I also thought they didnt use the sharp edge of the katana to deffend as they were doing here, didnt they use the flate side and soft edge, since hitting with the cutting edge would have destoyed thoes blades, I also would have also looked a lot better if they were using the soft edge and the side to defend, apart form that it was cool

  • Did Obata Sensei aprove of this?

The techniques arent flashy and look fairly realistic-all in all a good job

  • nevermind you added sounds over the video it seemed, so what I said probably does not apply...

  • I like this one, my one problem is, though honestly I don't know how you would do this without slipping up and seriously hurting each other. The swords just kinda "tapped: each other. None of your strikes seemed to realistically portray the intent to kill, which would make a much louder sound. (Though I still wouldn't want to be hit by a katana swung lightly either)

  • Wow, that's cool how you can do that without slipping up and hitting your friend! Lol I like how fast you were swinging at eachother too, more realism. Thumbs up for sure
