Splitting works, especially for clean wood like these small ash logs. However, with a bit of knot or burl, splitting tends to ruin one side of the log if not both for bowls. Also, for larger logs I like to make two cuts, one on either side of the center. That gives two pieces for bowls and the center slab for spindle wood. Plus the saw leaves a better surface for mounting a faceplate or chuck.
