The book was radically different to the movie.

Still, with enough nukes you could open up the planet and get to the bugs.

It's unbelievable how this movie is so realistic though it has already some years old... Not about the aliens, I mean about Humans! I take this movie as a criticism of how Humans (especially the ones from a certain country) are and the way the world is evoluting. Incredibly accurate...

Ask yourself this, isn't it convenient that the bug planets can sustain oxygen to the troops like on earth?

If you glass the surface, your boys can't land and clear out the tunnels. The bugs can survive in space, and in a radio active environment. Humans can't. Plus that would mutate deadlier version.

Though in the lore they had power armor/NBC suits (kind of like starcraft marines, but no where near as bulky). Putting legions of troopers in power army would be beyond the budget. So they had to make every world conviently have an earth like atmosphere.

Why shoot the bugs? Why not just nuke the planet to glass?

    I can understand why I don't make movies... :P
