This is presumably the only recording in existence of "The Nickel Under Your Foot," one of the most well-known songs from Marc Blitzstein's historic musical The Cradle Will Rock, with Blitzstein's full original orchestrations. This is the way it was intended to be heard before the cast and crew were locked out of the theater and the production was moved to another nearby theater where Blitzstein accompanied the cast with a solo piano. This recording comes from a radio broadcast on February 21, 1960 of the New York City Opera revival.
Unfortunately the sound quality could be better and the orchestrations are a bit hard to hear at times. Perhaps one day somebody will produce a full recording with full orchestra, but until then, this will have to do.
The cast is as follows:
Moll: Tammy Grimes
Directed by Howard DaSilva
Conductor: Lehman Engel
This performance is ridiculous. I love young Tammy Grimes! So full of life.
