Click the resolution number under the video to watch in 720p** More awesomeness at http://knitfreedom.com - - - "Checking Your Gauge" means measuring how many stitches are in one inch of Stockinette Stitch, using the yarn and needles you mean to use for your project. If your gauge matches up with the gauge specified in your pattern, you are good to go! But if you are off by 1/4 or 1/2 a stitch per inch, your garment will too big or too small!

Use a knitting needle one size smaller to increase your stitches per inch, increase your needle size by one size to decrease your stitches per inch.

  • Is it possible to make your own gauge from a small ruler and make notches into at certain points?

  • @Daylilydayzed Yes, that's a great idea! You actually don't even need the notches - just lay the ruler over your knitting, and you'll be fine. I use a regular ruler all the time. The important thing is that you DO check your gauge.

  • I've been watching other videos to understand this and this is the first video I actually understand. I'm just starting to knit so I need to learn to gauge
