ive taken a japanese class in college, and the book we used was the Genki second editon. i got about a C+ in the class, i found it extremely hard but that was because the information moved to fast for me to grasp. So im in the same boat as you since i will be self teaching myself at my own pace instead of going at a group. Then again its also nice to have a friend helping you out, or learning it with you becasue having someone to talk to and to practice on is nice. Good luck dude

Although not in Japan at the moment, when I was there I took a class, and the book that was used was "Japanese for busy people" they have different levels. I used book one, some will argue that this series is actually geared toward the actual classroom and not self study, but it helped me get the basic foundation for sentence structure etc. Anime is a great source for natural pronunciation, however depending on the material, there are some things you should not say normally.

@spec6635 Thanks you for posting and I will look at that book. it was something I was curious about how much Japanese people know before entering into Japan. I know it's nothing like visiting there and see how people interact with one another. Anime is ok I guess but like you mentioned; some words would not be appropriate to use. I will be doing a followup video in more depth and show my learning development.
