the ending does not teach anything. sure its possible but we dont want movies that are realistic thats what real life is for. we want movies that show what we should strive for. but i respect your choices anyway.

neoknux009 - valid point, but i'm used to writing and directing films that are effusive and/or hyperreal exaggerations of reality ('how to say i love you' & 'olivia explorer' as examples) but loneliness (especially through old age) is a subject that really affects and touches me, and sometimes you just can't turn a subject so sad in to a film with a happy ending. that's just my decision for this film, but thanks for your opinion.
