Madara and Pain are 2 of the coolest characters in Naruto.

And Pain was less of a pawn than a lot of the other Akatsuki members, such as Deidara, Sasori, Hidan, Kakuzu, etc.

his sheer chakra is unmatched and can beat ANYONE 1-1 and most anyone against him has no chance even in groups even Madara said he was undefeatable, he knew he was betrayed by Pain or he would of had the Nine-Tails instead of using such a massively powerful technique like Rinnegan awakening and killing himself.

Pain/Pein wasn't really a pawn he knew that Madara was using him BUT you realize that he was going to use the Tailed Beasts for his peace through Pain.

this would go directly against Madara thus he wasn't scared of Madara, just biding his time.

Also Pain could still beat Naruto (I'm a big Naruto fan myself so don't get me wrong) seriously it takes the life of a regular ninja (all the chakra)
