A simple way to practice the basic movements of proper slalom skiing. Allows a skier to learn to move in the desired direction of travel and use the design of the ski and other physical forces to create acceleration without as much load.

    Also,

    1) the goal is not to slow down to turn, but rather to maintain speed through the turn in order to keep up with the boat that will not wait for you.

    And,

    2) It's buoy, not bouey.

    Thanks for the comments.

None of this is a dig on your skiing, just an explanation of what I am trying to demonstrate and how it can be applied to a slalom turn. I do appreciate your comments, although I kind of think a better approach to the comment might have been to ask a question instead of berating something you don't understand. So if you look at your video, Rob Bob on the Allegheny, the reason the ski never really turns as you try to cut towards the wakes is that you have your weight/center of mass on your back foot and try to steer the ski back toward the wake rather than standing up over the ski and allowing your body mass to fall towards the wake slightly to create acceleration across course. By doing this as a "pull-out" rather than an actual turn, the skier has the comfort of the rope to hold them up so that they can take their center of mass (simple way to think of it is the hips and core) and allowing this part of the body to basically fall in the desired direction of travel. This is the same effective method to use to create a turn. (continued on footballrob34 reply #3)

Although I think your lack of tact with your comments is comical, I do understand that buried in your comments is a question about why this drill is important and/or what is the purpose of this drill. Here's my answer:

This drill is designed to give a skier a comfortable opportunity to practice body position and stance in order to understand how to effectively create movement in a desired direction on a slalom ski. (continued in footballrob34 reply #2)

  • I tried it this morning and I really liked this drill. The boat I ski behind isn't a ski boat by a long shot, so this helped me practice cutting without having to jump the large wake behind the boat. Very good drill. Now I just need to get behind a ski boat.

  • Great video. I've been looking for drills and ways to practice to reinforce good habits and to improve instead of going out and just skiing. I feel I've kind of plateaued as a skier and would really like to keep improving. Thanks for the video and comments, keep them coming. I have a drill for tomorrow!

  • this just made my day, ha ha

  • thats dumb to just practice pull outs why not practice the whole gate... and when going to the balls you are carrying all of your acceleration across the wake you need not make your own speed to reach the ball when you get the the bouey your slowing down and trying to turn.. imo good video i guess just dont see point in this sort of drill
