The P&0 line old SS Oriana arriving at Station Pier Port Melbourne Victoria Australia in about November 1984Oriana approaches Station Pier at Port Melbourne, arriving from Sydney (probably on a Melbourne cup cruise), and is videoed being turned by three tugs before berthing at outer west Station Pier. Some viewers might be interested in another couple of videos posted on my youtube/reidgck channel. One is taken beside SS Oriana at the wharf at Lautoka before departure, and the other taken on the bridge the next day while sailing to Sydney. The videos are of July 1984. Pity the ship has been wrecked at the breakers in China.

  • This video brought back some memories. I was working on this ship as a Radio Officer in 1984 and could well have been on it when you took this video. She was a fantastic ship.

  • @hargreg2 -- We were aboard Oriana for a Pacific cruise in or about July 1984. Had a great cruise. We made a radio telephone call from out in the South Pacific also so we may even have met you.

  • What a great video and what a great ship!! As a child of 6yrs I traveled with my family from Sydney to London on the Orontes (hence my profile name). We passed the Oriana on her maiden voyage, mid Indian Ocean. I have never forgotten the encounter. Rockets fired from each ship and horns blazing. Oriana looked absolutely incredible! Thank you again!

  • @TheOrontes -- Yes they were real ocean liners, steam turbine powered with plenty of space and a nostalgic luxurious feeling. The old SS Oriana ended its days on cruising out of Sydney, so many people were able to sample all this on its Pacific cruises. Diesel engine powered ships these days, that are built especially for cruises, although more efficient are not quite the same as the old liners. They are built for a different purpose. The video is in memory of SS oriana, Glad you liked it.

  • Superb video,i had the pleasure of sailing aboard her in 1974,she was a beautiful vessel, not like the ones we have today, she looked like a ship, not like a block of apartments...Thanks for the memory.........John

  • Nice vidio. Just wondering if anyone has a vidio like this abought the Orsova. I sailed on her in 1970 from Vancouver to Sydney. I heard it has been scrapped

  • thanks for posting reidgck I am presently building a 1/500 scale model of the Oriana from a plastic kit the vid helps with some of the detailing on the ships side

  • i have been onboard the Canberra at Sydney in 1972 still say that the Oriana was the better looking ship, Pity the chinese couldnt save her after the storm that damaged her behond repair.Never again will a fantastic looking ship sail the seas modern liners dont have the same profiles that the old ships had. R.I.P. Oriana

  • The most beautiful cruiseship ever, by far ...

  • Not many people onboard

  • I was fortunate to have spent two months on her as part of a three month holiday Vancouver to Southampton and back.
