Re: Why do Pinoys make fun of some Pinoy accents

Lot of Pinoys poke fun at Pinoy accents on YouTube and elsewhere. Someone asks why? I believe there are two main reasons:

1. Coping with the fear of being misunderstood
2. An expression of the extension of the social hierarchy from back in the Philippines

Personally, I'd that Pinoys laugh at some Pinoy accents because of the first reason because I find it less malicious. Appreciating it this way is no different than appreciating puns and double entendres. The second reason is just mean, and I have had the misfortune of seeing those I love suffer prejudice just because they had different accents.

Nevertheless, I believe it isn't a purely Pinoy phenomenon. I have Greek friends make fun of the Greek accent. I've watched "Goodness Gracious Me" with Indians poking fun and openly mocking their fellow Indians. *cough*Sarah Palin impressions as "proof" of stupidity*cough*

I just want to make clear that I DO NOT MIND when Pinoy accents are used in an actual comedic context (i.e. HappySlip videos and Rex Navarrete). What I DO MIND is when people assume things based on accent.

@TheOrionCDO It's my first and only video: I am not used to speaking to a camera. My first try was deemed too long by "test audiences"... I had to trim it down to the essentials after I've shot the video.

I mean, really, "dude" if that's the best criticism you can come up with—that my editing is so irritating—just move on. I'll be the first to admit there are better out there. I made this video to answer another video's specific statements, not to win any prizes.

Filipinos laugh at Filipino accents because it sounds funny. Thats it! it aint about fear of getting misunderstood. That is stupid!! It's just like when other Americans laugh at TEXAN accent because for them, it sounds funny! so it aint just the Pinoys doing this kinda shit

Ya man I dont mind other accents and its fun to play off of them. But I just hope more Filipinos will not bash on their old culture or their parents because it sort of says "Its okay to make fun of Filipinos becuse they are stupid."

What??? Nooo, we make fun of the Filipino accent because it's funny. There's no insecurity about that. It's not as funny as a Chinese accent, an Indian accent, an American redneck's accent. But it is funnier than a Canadian accent or a British accent

@28rabt eh yung nakilala ko nga sa Island pacific supermarket ayaw akuing filipino sya sabi pa eh me lahing kastila at 1/4 ek-ek pero ang accent naman eh Pinoy na Pinoy.
