The exquisite and deliciously wry new musical-drama from writer/director Christophe Honoré (Love Songs, Inside Paris), featuring an all-star cast headed by Catherine Deneuve and her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni, spans over four decades as it follows a mother and daughter's twin misadventures in love.

In Paris, 1964, carefree young Madeleine (Swimming Pool's Ludivine Sagnier) steals a gorgeous pair of Roger Viviers from the shoe store where she works, and whilst wearing her sexy spike heels is mistaken for a prostitute — an error that signals the next direction her life will take. But there's a further radical turn when she falls for and marries a suave Czech doctor Jaromil (Rasha Bukvic), leaving Paris for Prague -- and then his infidelities and the arrival of Russian tanks in the city in 1968 lead her back home.

Thirty years later we follow the romance of Madeleine's daughter, Vera (Mastroianni), a lovely but reckless young woman whose romantic life seems no simpler than that of her mother. She has a thorny relationship sometime-lover Clément (Louis Garrel) but on a trip to London falls for an American, Henderson (Paul Schneider), a man who'll prove incapable of devoting himself to her. Meanwhile in Paris, a re-married Madeleine (Deneuve) has rekindled her love affair with Jaromil (now played by Milos Forman)...

Performed with relish by one of the most glittering casts assembled in recent French cinema, BELOVED conveys its emotional highs and lows through a mix of songs that mine the passion and despair of unrequited, mismatched and unconsumated desire. Influenced by Jacques Demy but with a contemporary style all his own, Honoré has made a film of many delights, not least of which is the sight of Deneuve's character strolling through Paris, singing through tears and revisiting her reckless youth.

I was like: what is that random song doing in there? Oh, Louis Garrell. Oh, Christopher Honore. Makes sense now.
