This is a short intro animation we created for a client. They provided us a couple still images of their office building and wanted a motion graphics styled animation starting with their company sign being drawn out on old style drafting paper and as the camera pulls back from the sign the building is drawn out as well while transitioning to the full original photo of the building.

The budget wasn't there to create an entire photo real scene with their building so I opted for a camera mapping technique coupled with a very low poly model created in Autodesk Image Modeler using the 3 or 4 images they had given us. We did render to a few passes to comp in AE but most everything you see was done directly in 3DS Max including the drawing effect. The more I have played with camera mapping the more I realize just how much potential this one little technique holds!

  • Thanks! You can do something similar entirely in AE. You could animate paint strokes or perhaps a simpler approach would be to animate masks to reveal lines rather than animate the lines themselves. With 3D layers you could simulate the depth effect I am getting out of Max, it just may limit your camera move and not be completely convincing depending on the subject since AE can only work with flat plans. For this I worked alone and turnaround was about a week from concept to finished piece.

  • Nice job! :)

  • Oh and If you don't mind, I'd like to know what the turn around time was for this and how many people worked on it. Thanks.

  • This concept is great! Thank you for the info on how you did it. I am doing research for a similar project and this helps a lot. I will be creating the entire thing in AE though since I don't have access to 3D software in the office. I think it would be possible to get the same effect with just the stills, cameras, and lights in AE, correct? Thanks again for the input!
