One of the benefits of the Rock Island Train Festival last summer was the chance to see NKP 765 and QJ ferry moves to and from Rock Island.

Always a class act, Iowa Interstate used the occasion to bring a record-setting 7,078 ton freight train from Iowa City to Rock Island. See the TRAINS Newswire story here:

Videographer Mark Paulson captured the QJ ferry moves for our "Steamin' Summer" DVD series. Here's an example showing the whole train at Moscow, IA.

  • I agree with you that "record setting" can be interpreted in many ways for maximum effect.

Although longer and/or heavier trains have been pulled in the past by steam locomotives, this was a unique modern-day opportunity to show what two steam engines can do. Thanks to Iowa Interstate for demonstrating the power of their two QJs.

The diesel by the way, was dead in tow.

  • They might have gotten longer, but as far as power goes most of the freight locomotives from the late era are far more powerful hp wise then all of but the newest diesel electros from ge for example, excluding the big blow turbines and the double unit locos they used in the canadian rockies, the steamers had more power and could easy go toe to toe with the diesel electros powerwise, I know they are less on mantainance and personal, and effecent but it takes two or more to equal a late steamer.

  • @manga12 765 is the biggest since PM 1225 went down for a rebuild in 2009 (bigger by some standards). I am completely aware these locos are the "americanized" chinese QJs. And the amount of cars here might equal 120 cars back then. Railcars have gotten longer as the years passed, so this could easily be a big freight even by steam era standards.

  • there are five mainliners currently, 765 is the biggest east of the mississippi they tell me at her home. Those by the way are chinese locos that were restored it is my understanding. 20th century or not I was talking about post work era for the steamers, like the 80s though today, a double header was not that necessary they could have pulled the whole load with just one those are very large locos just like the lima berks.

  • @manga12 Keep in mind when the 765 pulled those they were in the 20th century. This is the 21st century. Steam on the mainline is a lot rarer now then in the 20th century.

  • 57 cars I count, I mean dont get me wrong I enjoy the video of steam but I just dont see what is soo record setting about it beside the fact that its the heavyest pulled in the new mellenium by steam, and I did not see 765 in the mix

so ignore my first post before reading the newsrelease.

  • thats nice, but are the steamers on lead pulling or just being pushed, and what is so record breaking about this train 765 pulled over 100 car trains up the new river gorge by herself on excursions and holds the record for doing so years ago, I know of her and as you see from my videos have been to the steamtown where they keep her several times.

so what is so record setting about her beside the fact its a rare double header steam?

  • NICE!!!
