Says the straight white guy... If a person is screaming faggot and beating the hell out of me , that person's intent is incredibly specific. If the day comes the certain people that go out specifically to harass and or harm specific populations dont exist anymore;maybe then we wont have to document hate crimes. Its important that we document hate crimes so that we can prevent these crimes with education.

There are other causes like negligence, recklessness, insanity, etc. and most crime can be argued to be petty and driven by profit motive (including some assaults like if the victim didn't hand over the money).
"This legislation does nothing to solve the problem, it only treats the symptoms."
The criminal justice system rarely, if ever, solves the problems. Wouldn't you want to at least quell criminal activity?

Furthermore, to say that hate can be stamped out is stunningly idealistic. It's never, ever, EVER going to happen. There are waaaay too many dumb motherfuckers out there that cannot be reasoned with.

I totally, wholeheartedly disagree. Punching someone in the face should have a punishment. It shouldn't matter whether it was because he had red hair or because he called my mom a twat. It's not illegal to hate. Its illegal to punch. Period.

We need to educate our children to be free of hatred so that they grow to be adults who are free of hatred... Unfortunately I don't see it happening in this lifetime.
