This Blender modeling tutorial will show you the steps required to model a Bishop Chess piece without using the boolean operation to cut the slot. It may be a tedious process but it delivers a good result.
@DibsOnMe Hmmm, if you select a group of sub objects (vertices, edges, faces) and scale to 0, they are going to collapse to one point if you use the median point pivot centre. I think I used move instead.
@304Stephen You can do that, this is just a modeling reference habit that I brought over from 3dsMax and Maya. The benefit of using a textured image reference is that I can rotate in perspective view and still see the reference, and also align it directly without fiddling with the numbers in the background image box. This is especially useful when I'm modeling a vehicle using 3 view drawings.

that was great, thanks :D
but I have a problem. Whenever I extract and move the edges of the mouth, and then scale them to 0, it creates a single point. Any way to fix this?

instead of using a cube, couldn't you just cut using the image as a background in side view to get a more accurate slot?

You are very welcome!

The Edge Split modifier is a real life Saver!
I made one with Boolean. The clean up on the cut has to (should) be done anyway, but the end result is the same.
However, I do prefer the Knife Exact tool because it leaves a much lower mess to clean up and it takes way less time to get the cut done.
A thing I noticed is that Edge Split does NOT work well with Subsurfs. Leaves Gaps. But the Edge Split does a very good job helping to smooth, anyway.
Thanks very much Weeliano, this is great.
Cheers
