A massive thanks goes to junkershvn for sharing the early beta versions he has for Rockman 8 for the PS1 (and the awesome folks at Capcom of Japan for making this game). This video is for the earliest version he has which only has two stages available. There may be additional content on the disc that is normally not selectable/available. If I find anything I'll post a video about that as well.
Also, sorry about the low music and the microphone's sound. I tried to avoid that but it didn't quite happen.

The music tracks, a voice clip, and PSF files from this version can be found here:

The unused "Shoot. Shoot!" signs I mentioned in the video can be seen at Sprites Inc here:

The codes for infinite use for each of those weapons, really shouldn't be necessary since power ups are easy to get, but some people requested them anyway.

Thanks to xnamkcor for pointing out the additional stages and to JosephCollins for covering them in his response video. I unfortunately made the mistake as passing them off for random junk. I was changing multiple things at once and thus messed up the graphics and backgrounds to the opening stage and the ice stage. So when I saw those other stages, I thought it was due to the game showing random crap because of my tinkering. I'm glad xnamkcor pointed it out though as I probably wouldn't have gone back to them.

When on the stage select screen, enable of of these codes at a time (not more than one). Press down & start to access it.

"Stage Modifier-Amusement Park Stage (Clown Man)

  • Maybe I didn't pay enough attention, but it's me or there are no bolts at ALL in this build?

  • @SpiralPegasus

Yeah, there are no bolts that you can pick up in this build.

  • Also, the Cacom logo animation is different. It uses the PSX X3 version, rather than the "lights and prisms" version used in the final, X4, and Battle& Chase.

I Also think the little box around the "start continue etc" is different. I dont recall those hammers there... Wow the underwater part is COMPLETELY different in look. I think Rock's swimming animation might be different too. Hmm. what would be interesting would be if those unused "Shoot! Shoot!" warning things are in this build

  • @FlameG102

What hammers? I must be looking at it wrong. o_O

  • Look at the box. look at the two dark blue parts. dont those resemble hammers?

  • @FlameG102

Oh, that. I think the final version does have that.

  • Here's hoping there are more unused tracks in this beta build. Is there a possibility you can upload a music appreciation of all the unused tracks? Or if you can make the whole build available for public?

  • Music-wise, every track this video shows is completely absent from the final release. Opening stage is more upbeat and happy. Stage select sounds more menacing. And Frost Man Stage sounds more classic-ish than the final theme.

The final theme is more ominous and echo-y, like many final songs. The beta theme makes more emphasis on individual instruments and sounds somewhat more harmonic. I'm even considering if there was a change of composers somewhere in the middle of RM8's development.

  • @protoman111: I personally would love to beat the shit out of the level designers and programmers for that segment myself.

  • 2:46 it could have been for debug purposes.

  • I love the beta stage select music. Epicness!

  • The Frost Man Snowboarding stage wasn't so bad. It's the damn Wily's snowboarding one that got me every time (towards the end everytime).

  • Mets Seem Faster in this version compared to the actual game

  • Very nice. I also don't recall there being sound effects for the birds on the island stage, and is it just me, or does Rock seem slightly bigger (almost as big as in R&F in this game)?
