[This video is dated however it remains as I love folk music and if that's what you're into too I hope you like my attempt. However it doesn't really reflect my current direction or hairstyle, so take it or leave it with my blessing.]

A quickie this time round. Standing in my freezing cold utility room in the middle of the night so as not to wake anybody up.

We all know the fast, punchy version of this song, but I wanted to share this version with you all. It is much more mournful and seldom heard. I love this song and hope to re-record it at a later date. Sorry for messing up some of it, I'm pretty tired. Heh.

The story of this version is that of an 18th century Cockney costermonger whose betrothed is convicted of a crime and sentenced to be transported for seven years to the continent of Australia. He promises to be true to his love and vows to wear green willow sprigs in his hat for over a year to signify his loss.

The song is prevalent in Canada and England, with many different versions, and it also appears in Scotland. A version to be found in Ireland, though I've not found it, appears to refer to the Troubles and earlier conflicts (a-la Wolfetones).

Hope the history lesson is a'right with you all. Cheers.

  • Jim, I love the way you do this song. I would only add that you try doing it without strumming the strings but sort of finger pick them in a quiet way to bring up more of your voice and less of the guitar. I give you an 8 out of 10 and it would be a perfect 10 without the slightly harch guitar.

  • Thanks for the C&C mate, I'll definitely take it on board when I re-do this one. It's one of my faves! ;)
