DENVER — Area monsoon floods streets, cuts power. Heavy summer thunderstorm hit with a fury Thursday (July 7, 2011). Causes urban flooding in the Denver metro area. Washed out roads, flooding streets and stranding drivers in stalled-out cars.
Firefighters in Denver rescued several people from cars stalled in high water around rush hour. Manhole covers were floating in the rushing water. The National Weather Service said up to 2 inches fell in less than an hour in the northeast downtown Denver area.
Xcel Energy Inc. reported 28,000 customers in the Denver area lost power Thursday afternoon from the storms. Reports that power had been restored to all but 9,000 customers by 11 p.m.
