Non piangere, LiùDon't cry, Liù,
se in un lontano giornoIf in a faraway day
io t'ho sorrisoI have smiled to you
per quel sorriso,For that smile,
dolce mia fanciullamy sweet girl,
m'ascolta:Listen to me:
il tuo signoreThe lord of yours
sarà, domani,will be, tomorrow
forse, solo al mondomaybe, alone in the world.
Non lo lasciar...Don't leave him...
portalo via con tecarry him with you.
Dell'esilio,Of exile,
addolciscia lui le stradeyou sweeten for him, the road.
Questo...questo,This... this...
o mia povera Liù,oh my poor Liù
al tuo piccolo cuoreto your little heart
che non cadethat doesn't faint:
chiede coluipray for the one
che non sorride più.that doesn't smile anymore!

  • What magnificent sense of dynamic proportions and of vocal coloration! A real tragedian's voice!

  • Questa è la voce del principe Calaf! Non quelle vocine leggere o viceversa quelle tante voci pompate e innaturali. E' poi superfluo parlare della meraviglia interpretativa e della tecnica INEGUAGLIATA di Pertile. Grande maestro!

  • Correct spelling: Non piangere, liu. Thank you for posting.

  • Une des plus grandes interprétations:De l'art et du chant!

  • Il canto di Pertile ha un fascino unico nella storia della lirica. Grande video.

  • Grande Opera e grande voce Grazie da Walter .

  • Corelli was the prince but Pertile is surely the King of Tenors. The most accomplished. It am astounded that he pre-dates most celebrated tenors yet he possesses and masters with subtlety elements that all those after him trademarked. I hear everyone in his voice. His recordings are a monumental legacy.

I prefer Cortis' version of this aria though, he was pretty cool guy too_*

  • I think Turandot is pretty cool guy, eh sings opera and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • Wonderful recording. The translation right next to the Italian is a terrific addition to a full appreciation of this aria. Thank you, Paul, for doing this for Youtube listeners :))
