@YY4Me133 The people in that study were Americans. Very few people, especially in America do the sort of things you're describing here.

@YY4Me133 The longevity project is the longest running scientific study in history. They followed 1500 people from childhood until death. The book by the same title is about the results of the study & what lifestyles increased longevity & happiness. Two major areas covered by religion. It's not a philosophy or a study in medical advancements. Studies show that the religious live longer happier lives than atheists & that book can help to narrow the gap. It should be taught in health class.

@KenMacMillan Religion has been used to bind the in-group, and disparage outsiders. It's been used to stifle progress, justify theft of land, killing, torture, etc. We can come together on issues of importance to us all, but not if religion continues to separate people. Not if ignorance, i.e. faith, is seen as superior to rational thought and science.
I don't know anything about The Longevity Project, but if it's about increasing human lifespan, I don't see how that helps.

@YY4Me133 No, I'm stating the historical fact that religion has been the major component used to bind people together for all of recorded history. I'm suggesting that we can't just eliminate it without replacing it with something else. Personally I'd start with the longevity project. It's not enough but it's a start.

@KenMacMillan Are you actually suggesting that the only thing that can "bind people together" is ignorance?
-
@KenMacMillan we can replace irrational beliefs with atleast more rational beliefs.
Actually I am not against believing, I am just against promoting and supporting (via tax legislations) something that have no rational belief attached to it.
Let churches pay taxes, even let them do business as long as they pay taxes, but let them also pay taxes for contributions. And the only excempt from taxes are legitimate volunteer work.
AronRa. The Genghis Khan of atheism.

@KenMacMillan Who prays over their children and lets them die, rather than get medical attention? Who beats their children with a "rod," sometimes to death? Who cuts off their baby's arms, drowns them in tubs, smashes in their heads with rocks because some god "told them to? Who tries to limit personal freedoms, interferes with education and science? Not atheists. *If* atheists really are not as happy as theists, it's because theists make life miserable for everyone else.
