Parenting methods have shifted from whence we were children and now with the "never say no" and "spanking is evil" philosophies, the how to of discipline varies from family to family and child to child. Karen Walrond of chookooloonks admits she's tough on her daughter and often uses the "count down" method, while Maria Young of immortalmatriarch uses her daughter's full name to get the message across. Cool Mom's Daphne Brogden doesn't do time out- but counting down is big in her house.

But in order to stick 'em where it hurts and make the disciplining process effective, Dana Loesch of Mamalogues says you gotta go after their "Currency." Take games, toys, things like Wii away- the things they depend on- the things that they rely on to know that you mean business.

  • @whelenvortexr4 Ha-ha! I can’t ague against that, it sounds like a good common sense solution to obstinate behavior.

  • @cliff01x I'm a guy and I'm interested in children. I have a friend who was my teacher in middle school and, she doesn't do the count down. I was raised to do something after an adult told me to. Not 1 2 3, I mean now. Tips for parents whos kids watch tv and their parents tell them to do something. If they say like, " I'll do it during commercial time", take the remote, turn the tv off, and say it's commercial time.

  • @moonrice555 The most important thing for a child is love, care and discipline. If the later is achieved as you prescribe then better. However, I feel it rather arrogant to assume that this is always the case and that all other (loving) parents who occasionally administer a short sharp shock are wrong. (But not to be confused with vicious parental violence etc)

  • @cliff01x I would say "If all else fails" then you're doing something wrong. As long as you're not a pushover, you don't need spanking. And why do you automatically assume the psychologists are "pie in the sky"?

  • for older kids just take away ipod, phone , dont let them go to a party im a kid i just looked this up cuz im babbysitting

  • Ladies, you appear to be very good and sensible parents. However, may I be so bold as to suggest that where all else fails a an old fashioned spanking might be in order. Yikes! do I hear shouts of disapproval from our modern day (Pie in the Sky) psychologists....No matter I come from an age when this was proved in most cases to be effective.
