What I don't like is that John Woo uses the chronicles of the three kingdoms rather than romance of the three kingdoms as his reference for the movie. Though chronicles is more historic, many more people are familiar with the entertaining, more fictionalized account that is ROTK, including myself.

Too bad the Chineese government meddled with the film. They protested certain actors. Then made script changes that upset some actors like Chow Yun Fat and that one guy (played broken sword) from Hero. Then to top it off they rushed the production so it would be finished by the olympics.
I would say I was upset they are making the movie to be government propaganda. But (as much as I love the book) Romance of the Three Kingdoms was always propaganda.

I don't think that's true. Chinese government doesn't have that much control over private movie productions. Chow Yun Fat quit not because of script changes, but because of money dispute. I also don't get why you think they are making the movie as government propaganda. This book was written a couple hundred years ago and is not related to communists in anyway. :) In the upcoming movie, they are actually trying to make it more historically accurate than the book.

Chow Yun-Fat originally was going to play Zhou Yu, but he quit after the first day of filming for some unknown reason (perhaps money, perhaps interference from his wife). So Tony Leung rejoined the team to play Zhou Yu. The funny thing was Tony Leung was originally going to play Zhuge Liang, but declined the offer citing no time for prepration. Apparently Chow Yun-Fat felt bad about quitting and decided to rejoin as a guest star to play Huang Gai.
