Track 6 off of the 2009 album "Nostalgia 77 Sessions Featuring Keith & Julie Tippett." Hip experimentalists Nostalgia 77 are joined by the royal couple of UK free jazz to play an arrestingly beautiful mixture of bop, blues, and folk-tinged songs. As Julie was once Julie Driscoll the grittier, jazzier Dusty Springfield who sang "This Wheel's on Fire" with Brian Auger and the Trinity and she hasn't sung, nor pianist Keith played, tunes like this for 40 years, the rarity value is huge.

  • @SoulstylistJukebox

totally agreed she was VASTLY ahead of her time and took chances with material other singers of the time doidnt dare try bless her!!!!

  • try Koop, Verve Remixed series (some tracks), Terry Callier, Gretchen Parlato (new cd), Esperanza Spalding, Herbie Hancock - River cd, Melody Gardot, Pink Martini? @majicodemejico

  • @SoulstylistJukebox I calls 'em as I sees 'em. I'm 57. I was there. I thought iher voice was whiny. At any rate she sounds much better here.

  • @phyllis1753 "screeching"? "Just a phase"? Her work with Auger was FANTASTIC. There's no need to be rude.

  • She was so great then, too....her voice was perfect for expessing in a unique way. It was her signature which you could pick out in a crowd. This is great jazz, but there are so many singers that could stand in on this tune. I love her any day! The ending is cool!

  • It's a free form jazz thing but I don't know much else, either. Wish I could help.

  • Hey since you are here would you mind pointing me to other music similar to this? I've been listening to nostalgia 77 and really like it, but I don't know where to go from there. I would really appreciate it if you, or anyone could point me to some other stuff like this. Thanks!

  • This is a vast improvement over the screeching she did with Auger. Perhaps that was "just a phase" she went thru. She actually shows good voice control on this track. Thanks for posting.

  • This is absolutely excellent. Though I have to admit I don't much of a taste for her kind of scat singing.
