...in Yuja's rendition we got the "bubbly vivacity" you are supposed to hear in your Mendessohn, but here LL gives us this shrill, mechanical pounding...how did LL ever get his reputation for being ANY kind of a pianist?...are ALL of his audiences out of their minds?...

i feel that this piece should be played "tom and jerry" like.
very playful

I like it. Often, I'm on L.L."case", not here. I hear joy, excitement, thrills, orchestra and soloist conversations, exuberance, a ton of fun.

Yuja Wang's version sounds so much better.

why does it sound wrong to me?

Some of these comments are downright silly. This is well known in the piano world as a "beginner's piece" that is built around arpeggios and scales (I played it with an orchestra when I was 15 and I'm no professional, which explains why it's not heard much in concert halls. Lang Lang is obviously having a lot of fun with the elementary pieces, and manages to find nuances that have escaped the standard recordings (e.g., Jose Iturbi, Ania Dorfmann).

I think he plays it fast and clear simply because he can...xD

I agreee with berlinzerberus, it sounds like Tom and Jerry. I don't even dare say that Lang Lang isn't an outstanding pianist, but this one sounds very very superficial and seems to me he thinks (and it's true) he can play it easily and doesn't really enjoy the piece but he enjoys managing playing it fast and clear. But music has to do with emotion it's not a sport (my opinion)
