Helena M. Morvan, originally from the Caribbean island of Dominca, has taken a long journey to become a nurse.

She first began her career with a bachelors degree in business and then went on to become a home health aide. I love to care for the elderly. Because of that I started taking classes toward my associate in nursing.

BMCC, one of the best
With that goal in mind, Morvan, who had been living in Florida, began searching for one of the best two-year nursing schools.Morvan says, A number of people recommended BMCC, and I decided to transfer to BMCC and within one semester, after completing my prerequisites, I got into the nursing program.

"It can be really tough, but for me it was more or less balancing my time. After my first semester, I decided to start doing tutoring and I actually worked as a tutor for the nursing students. It helped me to retain some of the material that I learned, says Morvan.

The scholarship from Caribbean-American Nursing Association
Morvan says that a turning point in her nursing career occurred in October of 2008, when Professor Hyacinth C. Martin, who is a member of the organization, the Caribbean-American Nursing Association, spoke to Morvan about the scholarship it was offering students. Morvan applied, and based on the fact that she had a high GPA, 3.66, she received the $ 1,000.00 award.

Advice to others interested in nursing
If you are thinking of getting into the nursing program I advise you that nursing is not something that you go into for the money. You have to do it because you love it. If you put everything into nursing and use all the resources at BMCC, I say go for it and give it your best shot.
