Performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Georg Solti. The soloist is Ray Still. This is a live performance. Sorry about the distortion in a few parts.

  • Still was one of my idols as a young oboist. This must be from early 70's or in 60's (?)

Thanks for posting this - I didn't realize he performed this difficult piece!

  • @maestrojimbo Actually, the recording was most likely in the 70s or 80s. By the way, I plan on uploading the rest of the concerto soon, I just haven't had much time to do that lately.

  • Ray was probably the first(initial!) oboist to play this concerto in the US. When Dr.Reiner asked Ray to play it for his first solo appearance with the CSO about 1956, Ray wasn't familiar with it. Despite it's great difficulty, he did play it in concert. Later, he played it with an orchestra under Herbert Zipper and Zipper's guest, Erich Leinsdorf, was just flabbergasted by Ray's performance, as I was too, having been there. In rehearsal he repeated the first movement, to check his endurance!
