This is so powerful and so strongly linked with the wonderful scene in Casablanca that I can't hear this without crying.

If i was a soldier in the 1700s or 1800s i would be marching under a French flag

War with Prussia and Austria was declared in April 1792 and both countries invaded france to restore the monarchy. When the song was written, 'impure blood' wwas non-French blood. The song implores the citizens to water the ground with it.
What it came to mean later, was, I believe' any Royalist blood. There were no racial implications.
