KABUL - A NATO helicopter crashed during a battle with the Taliban in Afghanistan, killing 31 U.S. soldiers and 7 Afghans, the Afghan president said on Saturday, a devastating toll and easily the worst single incident for foreign troops in 10 years of war.

Residents of the west London suburb of Ealing struggle to come to terms with the damage done to their community during the third night of rioting to hit the capital. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LIZ PILGRIM, OWNER OF BABY SHOP IN EALING: "I came round from where I live in Ealing - round the back roads and was met with more youths I can only describe as, I have been bandying this word all morning, but feral rats. There were just so many young, kinda 14, 15, 16 year old youths just everywhere. I just felt completely unsafe and intimidated so I just turned the car around and went back." (SOUNDBITE) (English) CARLUCCIO'S RESTAURANT WORKER NAMED AS SIMON: "It's hard to explain to be honest but it just doesn't seem ... why they do it.... I don't know what's going on or whatever but probably the kids don't know what it's about. They just need an excuse to just loot and smash things up." The trouble flared near Ealing Broadway underground station, with groups of masked youths torching property and cars, smashing windows, and looting shops. Some locals believe more violence may be coming. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAUL FUGGLE, OWNER OF BURNT OUT PROPERTY: "The worrying thing is it is unlikely to be here again tonight but it is just going to be somewhere else in London or another city tonight and you know it is encouraging to see on the news - middle of the morning - to see that some of the armoured vehicles were being bought in - the police looked so outnumbered." Police used armoured vehicles known as "Jankels" to push back rioters in Ealing overnight, and have warned they will use the tactic again if needed. David Cameron earlier announced some 16,000 police would be on London's streets on Tuesday night, up from the 6,000 on duty on Monday, boosted by reinforcements from across the country.
