"What A Friend We Have Jesus" guitar cover
Words: Joseph Scriven
Music: Charles Converse
==========
This hymn was originally written by Joseph Scriven (1819-1886) as a poem to comfort his ageing mother, who was suffering from a serious illness, and whom he hadn't seen for over 10 years. Scriven had suffered much personal tragedy in his life, losing his first fiancee who was drowned accidentally on the eve of their wedding in Ireland. He later moved to Canada where he met his second fiancee, but tragedy struck again - she died from a serious illness before they could get married. Scriven's health was severely impacted by these trials, but he never gave up his faith in Jesus, his Saviour, Lord - and Friend - and he became known as the "Good Samaritan" in his local community, dedicating his life to helping the poor, under-privileged and needy.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge,
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He'll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.
Hi. Wow. Interesting that you used a Gm7 chord near the end of the hymn. Love that!
