Episode #62: Useful Parent Phrases
Hello, this is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. Im your host and English Coach, David Hylton.
Welcome back after a lonnnnng summer vacation. Whew! I had to help my children do their summer research projects called jiyuukenkyuu. What I learned is that parents in Japan do most of the work and the children take credit for it. So this episode is for you parents out there, or anyone, who takes care of children.
OK, let's get started.
The most important phrase to know is "Stop it!" or "yamete!" in Japanese. Please repeat, "Stop it!" You can also be more specific with, "Stop hitting your sister!" or "Stop eating the cookies!"
The second most important phrase is, "Do it!" or "yarinasai!" in Japanese. Please repeat, "Do it!" You can also be more specific with, "Do your homework!" or "Do the dishes!"
The third most important phrase is, "Good job! or "yokudekimashita!" Please repeat, "Good job!"
A compliment feels good, and so does a hug, so give them to your kids today!
Good Job!
Thanks for joining this episode of BLT Eigo. See you next time right here on BLTnetwork.com. Bye.

It's hard to know how dialects fit...but the basic awareness of phrases and the intercultural understanding is very valuable! Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your comment...it is greatly appreciated. I was feeling a bit down after airing this episode. A listener informed me that the Japanese phrases I used were rather unique to this part of Japan.... So be aware that they may only work on children who understand the northern Nagano "parenting" dialect. I can't be responsible for any unforeseen consequences of using them on children from Tokyo or, heaven forbid, Osaka! ;-)
