Where did you solder the LEDs to on the board and did you need to use transistors?

@m91nagant conveniently enough, there's a 5 volt regulator on the power supply section of the NES. It's labeled as a 7805 and it's heatsinked with a screw onto some metal. That way you can determine the ohms needed to safely power your led. In my case I used a 7 color blinking led so I used a momentary switch in line with power and the correct leg of the LED to alternate colors.
No extra transistors are needed. Just a resistor and an led.

@vegetariandave thanks man really helpful could I run multiple LED's from the regulator? Which part of the regulator do I solder to?

@m91nagant You could definitely run more if they are in parallel with each other. Just don't do TOO many LEDs because that will use too much current. You can turn the NES on and touch the legs of the LED to the solder pads of the regulator, BUT if you have a multimeter, just use that instead.
