I think the only way that a movie can "ruin" a book is by changing the way a reader interpreted it. But it still depends on the person's opinion. Personally, I don't see how it's possible for anything to ruin a book after you've read it. Like you said, it's a matter of interpretation when it comes to books and movies, and whether or not you agree with a director's interpretation of a book.

Of course authors have intentions. Some have the intention of making a lot of money. But most want to *change* you. Whether they succeed or not is up to you to judge. But that can be said of life itself. What we take out of it is up to *us*. My intention at the moment is to exchange ideas. Now you get to judge if I have succeed at my intention.

Whoa. This was enlightening (clever and meaningful, as well), and I vow never to say a book-to-movie adaptation ruined the book again. :) Very well-said, and I am subscribing!

so, just wanted to tell you that this video is really really good. you did an amazing job of voicing your view in a way that made it easy for me to see it from your point of view. not a lot of people can do that effectively. i like it. i like it a lot.
also, i loved when you said "movies place you into a finished world, books force you to create that world for yourself". that was an amazing statement. might have made my top 10 favorite quotes list... if i had a top 10 favorite quotes list.

okay this is the first video i've watched of yours and i totally agree with your opinion! last semester in college my english professor said completely otherwise. she said that there is only one way to take a book and you have to anaylze and anaylze and analyze until you find the true message that the author was trying to say. bullllllcrap. i argued with her every single day.

I also tend to blame myself when this happens but I find that sometimes when I go back and read the book some of the original mental pictures come back wich is alwasy good :D

I love your brain. That may be a little bit weird for me to say, but I've really never been one to respect socially accepted boundaries. Also, you're fantastic at bringing a topic around full circle and saying the things that are actually important and meaningful, which is exciting.
I swear to god I am not in love with you. =]

@EmilyTakesontheWorld Have you noticed I live in the internet? I transcend weird. Thank you so much for everything! I make videos just to get comments like this... well, and to feel some level of satisfaction that I'm using my brain, and imposing my ideas upon the world. But also comments like this. ;)

I totally agree with a lot of your arguments butttttttt while I don't think a movie can ruin a book for me sometimes a movie can make me forget some of the origanal picture that I created in my mind when I first read the book. That can be kind of anoying but its true the it doesn't make the book suck.
I love you rants very cool and intresting

@Giascreen Well that's kind of the nature of films, I suppose. They plant an image in your head that is hard to get rid of. But I don't think that's necessarily the fault of the film. I blame myself when that happens because I didn't get a strong enough mental picture... or you could blame the author I suppose.
