1st Place winner at 2011 FBLA-PBL National Leadership Conference - Orlando, FL

Case study:

You are the marketing manager/marketing management team of Armstrong Development. Your company must convince the mayor and city council of a growing city to put an $800 million professional basketball/entertainment arena on the November ballot for voters.

Armstrong Development has a long history of building sports arenas, convention centers, and major downtown projects for large cities. Projects completed by Armstrong Development range from $100 million to $1 billion. Your company is convinced that the city needs a new basketball arena and entertainment center. One of your reasons for the new arena is to make sure that the professional team is not lured by different city offering a better facility.

As the marketing manager, you are responsible for convincing the mayor and city council of the need to build a major sports and entertainment arena. You must explain the economic impact of building this structure. Most people are highly concerned about how the structure will be paid for during difficult economic conditions. Your presentation must highlight the benefits that the arena presents to residents and the financial return from increased taxes. You must be able to explain how corporate sponsorships finance major arenas. Your presentation must highlight city image, employment opportunities, revenue to the city, and other financial benefits from the major investment.

Why should citizens have the opportunity to vote on the proposed sports/entertainment arena? What is the value of corporate sponsorship for a sports/entertainment arena? Why would a city be reluctant to build a new sports/entertainment arena? What are your main talking points to convince the mayor and city council? Why would this proposal be more feasible during better economic times? What is the relationship between this proposal and employment for the city?
