Just bought a Garrard 2025 at a thrift store. The arm won't auto return and the spindle wont drop records. I am new to working on Garrards and am looking for advice.

If you need a better view of any parts let me now and I will post another video.

  • FIXED!!!

I was missing the wishbone that goes in the cartridge, hence why I was not getting any sound, got a new cartridge and it sounds great! I swapped the spindle to a manual one, so screw the auto-drop. Re-greased everything and was finally able to get the pawl out of the cam, which took some work, the grease had turned to glue in there and the pawl was actually pivoting on the rivet at the top. Everything works properly in manual and with the fixed pawl it tone arm auto-drops and picks up.

  • I agree with Vinylrecordsneverdie. If you have a look at my video "BSR Turntable Seized Record Repair", you will see how to re-grease this cam and the brass lever that is attached to it, as mentioned by Vinylrecordsneverdie. Although it's a BSR, most cheaper changers of that era were all the same. Hope this helps!

  • @tubeie07. Thanks, great video, I just greased the post in the 4" gear. Everything turns freely now. The issue I am currently having is that when I slide the bar to activate the auto play it seams the underneath arm is too weak to push the gear the 1/4" it takes to engage it. The "automatic trip pawl" is the part giving me the problem I think. Can I remove that part from the gear in order to better oil it? Any suggestions on the next step? I can post another vid of the new "problem" if you like.

  • Happy Thanksgiving BTW!

  • @Vinylrecordsneverdie Thanks for the advice!

  • i hate playing one reocrd at a time for get that lol. give me a record changer any day some other playing. who plays a 45 lol its one song and you whoud have to keep chaing it

  • @krismedina Hi, yes you can remove the "automatic trip pawl" from the gear, it's just a cir-clip holding it on underneath, just take note of how it all goes back together again. If the bar that pushes this lever is not strong enough, again it's just gummed-up grease, so a cleaning and re grease will fix that. Remember, it should all move freely and with little effort. If you wish to post an update video once you have worked on it, that would be great !

  • Since the 4" gear moves freely, my theory is the brass lever on that gear may be stuck due to dry up grease. WD40 will fix that. Hope you can get it going.
