The Chinese economy become the second-largest in the world this week after it passed Japan in the second quarter of 2010.

The milestone, though anticipated for some time, is the most striking evidence yet that China's ascendance is for real and that the rest of the world will have to reckon with a new economic superpower.

The recognition came early Monday, when Tokyo said that Japan's economy was valued at about $1.28 trillion in the second quarter, slightly below China's $1.33 trillion. Japan's economy grew 0.4 percent in the quarter, Tokyo said, substantially less than forecast. That weakness suggests that China's economy will race past Japan's for the full year.

Experts say unseating Japan — and in recent years passing Germany, France and Great Britain — underscores China's growing clout and bolsters forecasts that China will pass the United States as the world's biggest economy as early as 2030. America's gross domestic product was about $14 trillion in 2009.

  • @ecwaufisxtreme Ha ha. That's a good one. I can just imagine Palin at the head of the conquering Christian super army. God help us all if Palin ever comes within 10 heartbeats of the Presidency.

  • @TheDailyConversation

This Christian Super Army will be comprised of INVINCIBLE INDESTRUCTIBLE AMAZON GOD WARRIORS that can easily PWN little Chinese men. One AMAZON GOD WARRIOR can easily topple 1000 chinese soldiers.

  • @ecwaufisxtreme Nice, so we are going to align with South America on our quest for world domination?

That is so contradicting considering in the Christian religion women are essentially second class citizens who sole purpose is to serve their man. I suppose we could use them as warrior slaves but since they are considered the weaker sex we maybe getting our ass kicked... according to the Christian religion that is...

  • easy come, easy go

  • Remember what Martin Luther King said in 1967. If America refuses to change her ways, God will rise up and break the backbone of America's power and pass it on to someone else. And China will receive that broken backbone of power.

  • @Doggy10110

If china's economy goes down, it will affect the US and the entire world also.

  • @shaochiavang Just look at the picture. China is over built. One city in the Southeast region was built but the government to have a popualtion of around 4 million. Only 20,000 people call this city home. That means all of these skyscrapers are empty bringing the prices down. Just remember the housing bubble in 2008. That put us in a recession. in China it is about to happen there exept on a larger scale.

  • In addition the average Chinese works 2800 hours per year while the average American works 2200 hours a year and the Chinese outnumber Americans by about 4 to 1. America will not be able to outproduce China. Another problem for America is that we have about $15 trillion of government debt (98% of GDP) while Chinese government debt is about 16% of GDP.

  • Well actually the Chinese economy as of 2011 is over $10 trillion per year and the U.S. economy is about $15 trillion. China's economy remained suppressed because of communism, but Deng Xiopeng brought in reforms using state controlled capitalism and that is when China's economy really started taking off. I heard that China's economy will surpass the U.S. in 2015. Annual economic growth rates: U.S. = ~2%, China = ~9.5%.

  • @Doggy10110

You have no knowledge in economics and politics.

  • China's economy is slowing down. They are about to have a popualation crash. Their GDP is 1.4 trillion dollars and slowing. The U.S will always be the superpower and China will just become the same waco country it has always been. Vote this comment up if you agree.

  • China the new superpower! America the follower!
