Very helpful, thank you. But how far from the choir are the mics placed?

There is a hierarchy to sound frequency depending on the acoustical environment and output level. Normally, say 10 big guys are in a room and talking at the same time, and a girl comes without being noticed and says hello. Who will hear her? Nobody. Conversely, if 10 girls are in a room talking and a big guy comes in with deep tone and says "hello", they all will hear him. Now, if 10 big guys are in a room talking and a girl comes in and squeals hello at a high output level, they all will her.

Positioning always favors female voices in these kinds of recordings. Engineers forget that sopranos will project better than basses, and putting the basses in the back (as per usual) will assure that they will get lost. I've always thought it would be wise to put the guys in front for recording - remember the inverse square rule of sound...
