@Bpeirce2 It may not be a nearby object but rather an extreemly dense one, like the black hole at the center of our galaxy, and while it isn't moving any closer to us it does effect us and the energy field it projects is rather thin, perhaps taking only a few years perhaps as long as 7 years for earth to pass through it creating a pole shift effect upon us and other planets in our solar system. Also it may violently effect our own sun causing it to emit EMP waves at our earth YIKES!

Poor explanation! Earth has been stable and consistent and correspond to close proximity of Jupiter and Sun. Which varies. The shifting of the magnetic pole has accelerated all of a sudden. Gravitational fields can be altered by outside influences as well. Or even a physical change in orientation of Earth itself. If you have a magnet it's magnetic field changes dramatically as you move a second magnet closer. This is what is happening to Earth and why its accelerating. Second large object.

@bokkabokk moreover it does not require planes nor explorers to measure. Imagine that at dozens of govt weather tracking stations the direction to magnetic north can be tracked over time with accurate compasses. Combining these multiple observations computationally, i.e. triangulation and projection, places the Magnetic North pole on the globe, [as a function of time]..
