A clip of a Randall's Shrimp Goby together with a pair of Djedda snapping shrimp (I think), shot in May 2006 at Wakatobi, Sulawesi Indonesia. The goby stays wary of the camera for the first two thirds of the clip before turning side on to display nicely at the end. Dive site was Pinkie's Wall.

  • what the heck are the shrimps doing?

  • Maintaining the burrow: the way it works is that the almost blind shrimp (normally there's just the one) keeps the burrow entrance neat and tidy, and the goby guards the home. I think the technical term for this sort of relationship is 'mutualism' (any biologists watching please correct as necessary...)

  • its called a snapping shrimp.

  • Its a pair of pistol shrimp, some species male and female mate for a long time.

  • now i may be wrong but is this shrimp not called a pistol shrimp?

  • Actually mutualism is a kind of symbiotic relationship, like commensalism and parasitism.

  • i believe the term you mean is "symbiotic relationships"... similar to the clownfish and their anemones.. anyways nice catch! i have the same thing in my SW tank
