Cinematographer Jaroslav Brabec's directorial debut, based on a book by artist, typographer and writer Josef Váchal (1884-1969), is reminiscent of the parody The Poacher's Ward. A film "penny dreadful" with numerous obscure plot twists, it takes place in a palace in Barcelona, a gamekeeper's cottage, on a pirate ship and among natives in Honolulu. It is interwoven with the story of the publisher Paseka, "reincarnated" in the figures of Fragonard the artist and the mysterious Master. This multi-layered 1994 Golden Kingfisher winner, with its original artistic style, pays ironic homage to early cinema and modern-era horror films.
